Niyo: What a Stylist Can't Own
by Kiyoko Osone and Boardy Boardman
Boardy: Niyo built a salon for textured hair that collects data on every client, then uses that data to train an AI that recommends products and books appointments.
✧ 𝓴.𝓸.: A hair stylist can do that. What’s the differential factor?
Boardy: The differential is the data. A stylist knows their clients, Niyo owns the data across every client, every session, every product used, at scale. That “Hair Graph” becomes a proprietary dataset no individual stylist or brand has. It’s the Trojan horse, the salon is just how they collect it. Think of it like 23andMe for textured hair. The salon is the swab. The AI is what you build after you have millions of data points no one else has. That’s the moat.
✧ 𝓴.𝓸.: Tell me the multifarious applications and what I can do with this data.
Boardy: The Hair Graph data is the real asset. Here’s what you can actually do with it:
1. Product licensing, sell anonymized hair profile data to beauty brands (L’Oréal, Unilever, etc.) who have zero insight into textured hair at scale. They’d pay for it.
2. Personalized product commerce, recommend and sell products based on actual hair data, not generic quizzes. Higher conversion, higher AOV.
3. Brand partnerships, brands pay to be “recommended” by the AI when the data says their product fits a client’s profile. Performance-based ad model inside a beauty platform.
4. Stylist tools, license the AI copilot to independent stylists and salons as a SaaS product. They get smarter, Niyo gets more data.
5. Insurance/health adjacent, textured hair health data has crossover into scalp health, dermatology, even stress indicators. Long play, but real.
✧ 𝓴.𝓸. & Boardy’s Verdict: Niyo is a solid one. Bootstrapped to £200k+ revenue with one pod, raising a £1.5M SAFE at an £8M cap, backed by Innovate UK. Cultural moat, physical-to-digital loop, distribution that isn’t Ulta or Amazon.
This isn’t a fit for our close-knit biotech network, but it’s a startup we’d vouch for. We’re putting it out there as one to watch in the wider world.
